You Ever Wanna Stuff That Effing Website in a Box?

Just spreading the word here--Cameron Kaiser released a new app called TenFourFoxBox which generates site-specific browser apps. Read his full blog post, but in short it allows a smoother and faster experience from resource-heavy websites by boxing them into their own browser processes and keeping spinning beachballs to a minimum. I've tried it out and it makes a difference.

Faster browsing is good.

UPDATE: And Adam Albrec has made a spiffy Twitter app out of this, including a custom icon.

  1. I will be trying this soon! What are your thoughts on leopard-webkit? I have found it pretty fast.

    1. I'm on Tiger, so I never used it. For me, webkit browsers are usually faster but tend to choke on really large pages where TenFourFox doesn't.

  2. I just installed it. WOW it is awesome!

  3. IMO Roccat is the best option for Webkit on Mac OS PowerPC. Much much lighter/faster than safari or leopard webkit. Still developed also.

    1. There was something in Cameron's blog post about Stainless being able to "box" sites just by opening a new window. I wonder if Roccat is the same.

    2. Thanks Zen, will definitely check that out.

    3. I'm not aware of any box-type feature in Roccat, but there is a snapshot option. It takes a snapshot of an entire page on any website, but is not a true boxing solution by any means.

As for TenFourFoxBox, I like it a lot. It will be especially useful on sub-1GHz G4 machines and G3's.

Dan, we need to get you a CPU upgrade for your Sawtooth so you can run Leopard. On the right CPU/GPU, Leopard actually outperforms Tiger.

I don't run Leopard simply for the better app selection, but rather because it's also noticeably faster and more stable than Tiger. On my Sawtooth at least.

I will help pay for it.

    4. Thanks very much for the offer, but Leopard isn't for me. No Classic, me no likey :)

Leopard would run comfortably on my Powerbook, but I've just never been motivated to leave Tiger.

    5. Zen,

You are right roccat is blazing fast! Thanks for the suggestion.

      Dan,

You need to have at least one machine running leopard ;)

    6. Leopard is bit of a quagmire. While somewhat better supported, unless you are on a big G5, always seems sluggy compared to Tiger, and doesn't offer the serious goods of either Tiger or Snow Leopard. The default wallpaper says it best: Cold and alone in the void of space between bright objects.

    7. Roccat always uses the version of WebKit currently installed for rendering web content.
For that reason one should either install Leopard WebKit to replace the ancient version that originally came with Safari 5.0.6 (for the ones who really know what that means), or drag the Roccat application on the Relink droplet from the latest version of Leopard WebKit in order to install Leopard WebKit into the Roccat application and make it use that instead of the currently installed (it will produce a new application named "Roccat LepWK").
Unfortunately the updated SSL/TLS support does not work yet with Roccat so there are some site you'll not be able to access using Roccat.
