It is MintPPC's fault that it has been pushing a 'testing' version of Debian. It took Dan two months to report the bug. A patch was produced within hours of him doing so. I think that is very impressive myself. I only ran Mint 11 for a weekend several months back and ended up putting Lubuntu 12.04 in it's place.

I would imagine Mint 11 is a better alternative to Lubuntu 13.04 because it has been worked on much longer. I found 9 performed a tad worse than Lubuntu 12.04.

The good news is that all the same software generally runs great on Debian, Mint and the Ubuntu's.

At the end of the day I imagine the Debian/Openbox (sans LXDE) combo you normally write about would run would be fastest. Yes, I know, there is a command line workaround. But for a newbie trying to find an alternative to OS X Leopard, that might be a deal breaker. The fact that it has been around for months and as of today still hasn't been fixed doesn't speak well for Debian's willingness to address problems in a timely fashion.
